Myths and misconceptions
Can I be hypnotised?
Anyone can be hypnotised if they want to be. Some people are more adept at entering a deep trance state easily but with practice anyone can learn to enter deeper trance levels.
Does the hypnotist have Power over the client?
The hypnotherapist does not have power over you; all hypnosis is generated by the client themselves (self hypnosis), assisted by the suggestions of the hypnotherapist towards the goals the client needs. Hypnosis works through the cooperation of the 2 parties involved: the hypnotherapist and client. Any suggestions contrary to your own belief system and moral values will not be accepted. No one can by hypnotised against their will.
Will I wake up?
Even in the deepest trance states there is no chance of not awakening. You can awaken any time you want to or need to. Hypnosis is not a state of catatonia but a heightened awareness and focus of attention in a relaxed state. You may fall into a natural sleep state whilst in trance but will awaken naturally from the trance state. Hypnosis is not a comatose state of submission.
Are there any Side effects?
There are no negative side effects. Hypnosis is a natural process that utilises your own inner resources to bring about positive change. Afterwards you will be able to drive and operate machinery safely.
Hypnosis is a relaxing state of heightened awareness and fascination. You will be guided into a meditative state similar to daydreaming where you can realise your potential, subconsciously alter your behaviour and manage pain more effectively.
The “Hypnotic” trance is similar to the trances we all find ourselves dipping into and out of each day. When in a routine and we lose our sense of time. When driving and we don’t realise we have missed our exit. When we are listening to music or watching TV and you don’t hear the phone ring or the door being knocked. In fact any state where our attention is fixed upon a single element to the exclusion of others, something as simple as reading a book.
These common everyday trances are familiar to all of us. The difference with the hypnotic trance you will enter is you will have a stronger focus of attention and concentration. You will then be able to utilise this focus to find resources within yourself to help you overcome stress, anxiety, to manage pain and to boost self-confidence and self-esteem.
This can take the form of a guided journey into a pleasant realm of your imagination where you can feel comfortable and relaxed. Or you can be taken back into a pleasant memory or projected into the future to find the resources you can use to your benefit.
Hypnosis directly communicates with the subconscious/unconscious mind to bring the changes you want and sometimes more than surpass your expectations.
What is hypnosis?
What is the subconscious/unconscious mind?
The conscious is the part of the mind that overlooks our waking state. It is our focus, our attention and our thoughts. It is everything we notice in the realm of our senses at any given moment.
The unconscious is the part of our mind that controls our internal organs, keeps us breathing and protects us without us having to give it any thought whatsoever. It happens automatically. The subconscious can pick up on things outside the sphere of normal attention and can interpret the meaning of complicated signals and signs instantly. (Sentences spoken and written as well as people’s faces & body language)
The unconscious gives us awareness in the world where we operate, through constantly monitoring our surrounding through the senses and our body from within.
Conscious is the thought process given to carrying out something new or that requires deduction and creative input. Whereas the unconscious is any action that happens automatically through learned repetition. Any process we do not actually have to think about both internal and external is unconscious.

Not magic or mystic.
Hypnosis is not magic or mystic in any way. Hypnosis uses psychological techniques to bring about a trance state. Once in the trance state you can utilise the body’s natural resources to bring about positive, effective change easily. Changes are dependant upon each person. Hypnosis is not a magic wand that cures at the click of your fingers. Through a working relationship between the therapist and the client you can identify the goals you want to move towards or the areas you want to move away from then work together to bring about these changes. Sometimes these changes can be incredibly fast.
